The Gardener's Shed

The inspiration for this aged outbuilding came from a drawing in a July 1891 Scientific American. This one-room potting and tool shed includes multi-paned windows, a six light front door, attached wooden bench, potting shelf, period Carpenter Gothic trim, a brick foundation and walkway, landscaping, and a sagging shed roof extension. Students will start with a partially assembled shell, and will learn such techniques as door and window construction, shingling, and board-and batten simulation.

Using paints, stains and simple tools we shall show you how we create the look of age, sag, slant and dry-rot (some of our favorite things!). Class work will also include how we trim and finish a project to give it a convincing illusion of reality.

Class time will allow only for exterior work, though we will make every effort to discuss interior treatments. The project will not be complete by the end of the class week, but students will have the materials, instructions and hands-on experience to finish the project at home.

Appropriate for all levels of students.
