Board & Batten Room Extension:
Exterior
Techniques
The
class project is a simple, shed roof extension of a room that might
have been added-on to a circa 1910-1930 home--in the case of the
prototype, we have made it a bathroom. It has a single window, and
sits on a landscaped base. Students will learn our techniques of
shingling, window construction, plumbing, landscaping, aging and
weathering with Bug Juice and paints. This is a techniques class,
for practical application of many of the finishing details we don't
have time for in our regular workshops. Class time will allow only
for exterior finishing, though many students have found time around
the edges to individualize their interiors--one as a sandlot baseball
ticket office, one as a concession stand, and another as a crafts
booth. Bring your ideas, and accessories.
In
this class, students begin with a partially completed shell, to
which you will apply aging, architectural detail, and landscape
elements to finish the fragment. You will learn how we work with
paints, stains and hand tools to make new wood look old, create
old brick and stucco, and to adapt manufactured items to suit
our
needs. While class work will focus only on exterior elements, many
students have
finished the interior on their own during the session, after class
hours.
The
classes are open to Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced students.
People with arthritis in their hands will find some of the hand-work
difficult and painful. It is highly recommended that you get your
glasses prescriptions updated before class.
